Vande Bharat Routes: Stops, Manufacturing, and Latest News
WL full form is Waiting List. Read about the Vande Bharat routes, key stops, how it runs, how it is made at ICF Chennai, and sleeper train news.
TL;DR
Vande Bharat Express trains are India's signature semi-high-speed train sets. Powered by a distributed traction system, they accelerate rapidly and run on popular corridors like Delhi-Varanasi and Mumbai-Gandhinagar. They are manufactured locally at ICF Chennai, with sleeper variations and global exports coming next.
How Does the Vande Bharat Train Run and Accelerate?
The Vande Bharat Express operates on a distributed traction system, utilizing electric motors mounted under several coaches rather than a front engine locomotive. This distributed power allows the train to accelerate quickly and hit speeds of 160 km/h.
Conventional trains in India depend on a heavy engine locomotive at the front to pull the carriages. The Vande Bharat replaces this with distributed power technology, similar to modern metro coaches and high-speed rail systems. Underneath alternate coaches, electric motors are mounted directly to the chassis, distributing the pulling force across the entire train length.
This design results in much faster acceleration. The train can go from a dead stop to 100 km/h in just 52 seconds, saving power and cutting travel times. It also uses regenerative braking, meaning it recovers energy and sends it back to the power grid when slowing down.
Where Does the Vande Bharat Train Stop? Major Routes Listed
Vande Bharat trains connect major industrial hubs and tourist spots across India. Main runs include Delhi-Varanasi, Mumbai-Gandhinagar, Delhi-Katra, and Chennai-Mysuru, stopping only at essential stations to keep travel times short.
To keep average speeds high, the Vande Bharat Express bypasses smaller stations, stopping only at high-traffic junctions.
Popular Vande Bharat Routes & Key Halts
- New Delhi - Varanasi (22436): The first route ever launched. Main stops include Kanpur Central and Prayagraj Junction.
- Mumbai Central - Gandhinagar (20901): Connecting key financial hubs with stops at Borivali, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad.
- New Delhi - Katra (22439): A popular pilgrimage route stopping at Ambala Cantt, Ludhiana, and Jammu Tawi.
- Bengaluru - Dharwad (20661): Stops include Yesvantpur, Davangere, and Hubballi.
- Chennai - Mysuru (20607): Connects Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with halts at Katpadi and KSR Bengaluru.
How is the Vande Bharat Train Made and Manufactured?
Vande Bharat trains are designed and built locally at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Over 80% of the train's parts are manufactured domestically, keeping build costs low compared to buying foreign imports.
Developing the Vande Bharat (initially known as Train 18) is a massive achievement for local manufacturing.
- Production Hub: The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai led the initial design, testing, and production phases.
- Domestic Sourcing: Roughly 80% to 85% of the components—from the aerodynamic steel nose to the interior seating and electrical systems—are supplied by Indian firms.
- Frugal Engineering: Building a Vande Bharat train set costs about ₹100 crore. That is roughly half of what it would cost to import a similar semi-high-speed train from Europe.
To meet growing demand, other coach-building facilities like RCF Kapurthala and MCF Raebareli are now setting up assembly lines to build these sets.
What is the Latest News on Sleeper and Export Vande Bharat Trains?
Indian Railways is currently building Sleeper Vande Bharat trains for long-distance overnight routes. Other plans include expanding routes, testing new saffron-grey color schemes, and exporting train sets to overseas markets.
The platform is expanding beyond day-trains:
- Sleeper Coaches: Current Vande Bharats are chair-car-only trains for routes under 8 hours. The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper will handle long-distance overnight runs (like Delhi to Mumbai). These will feature standard Upper, Middle, Lower, and Side berths, along with advanced shock absorbers for a smoother night's sleep.
- Visual Upgrades: Newer sets are rolling out in a saffron-and-grey color scheme, featuring better seat recline angles, reliable washroom sensors, and conveniently placed phone charging sockets.
- International Exports: Indian Railways is redesigning the train sets to run on standard-gauge tracks for export to African, South American, and East Asian markets.
How Can You Check Vande Bharat Seats and Coach Layouts?
To check Vande Bharat seat maps and booking availability, passengers can search online. If your ticket is waitlisted, note that WL full form is Waiting List. Tickets move from WL (Waiting List) → RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) → Confirmed, but Vande Bharat trains have no RAC class.
Because these trains are highly popular, you will often find seats waitlisted. Usually on Indian Railways, the waitlist clearing order is:
WL (Waiting List) → RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) → Confirmed
Since Vande Bharat trains only have sitting coaches and no sleeper berths, there is no RAC status on these trains. The queue goes straight from WL to Confirmed. If your ticket is not confirmed when the final chart is made, it gets cancelled automatically.
To get around waitlists, check for a "current available ticket". These confirmed seats open up for booking right after the first chart is prepared (4 hours before train departure) and stay open until 30 minutes before launch.
Additionally, you can use LastBerth's Finding Smart Seats tool to check if you can split the booking across different segments. You can track your ticket's confirmation odds with PNR Status Search & Direct Booking or check the physical seat maps using Seat Status Coach Journey Lookup.
