How to Get Confirmed Train Tickets During Dussehra & Durga Puja 2026
Durga Puja & Dussehra 2026 train dates, IRCTC booking opening days, Tatkal timings & what to do on REGRET. Split-ticket breaks that work for Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Patna, Mumbai-Ahmedabad.
🚀 Puja ticket showing REGRET? Direct answer: check Get Confirmed Tickets on LastBerth Smart Seats for two confirmed halves of the same train (e.g. NDLS–DDU + DDU–HWH).
Facts first — Puja 2026 dates & booking days
No story, straight facts. Puja travel rush: Oct 15 (Panchami) to Oct 21 (Vijayadashami/Dussehra). Kolkata, Howrah, Patna, Varanasi, Ahmedabad routes fullest. General quota on top trains goes in under a minute at 8 AM — I've watched Howrah Rajdhani vanish by 8:01.
2026 break-up you need:
- Panchami/Sasthi: Oct 15–16. Saptami/Ashtami/Navami: Oct 17–19 (peak pandal days). Dashami/Dussehra: Oct 20–21.
- IRCTC opens 60 days before, 8:00 AM IST sharp. Tatkal: 10 AM AC, 11 AM sleeper, one day before. Chart: 4–8 hrs before the train leaves its origin (morning trains usually chart previous evening ~8 PM).
- REGRET on IRCTC = they won't even sell waitlist now. And an online waitlist left over after chart = auto-cancelled, refund in a few days, but no travel. Don't board on it — TTE fines under Section 138.
Booking calendar (8 AM):
| Travelling for | Date | Book on |
|---|---|---|
| Sasthi rush — my WL 187 lesson in 2022, one day late! | Oct 16, Friday | Aug 17 |
| Saptami | Oct 17, Saturday | Aug 18 |
| Ashtami / Navami — pandal peak | Oct 18–19, Sun–Mon | Aug 19–20 |
| Vijayadashami / Dussehra | Oct 20–21, Tue–Wed | Aug 21–22 |
My honest tip? Set a 7:50 AM alarm, IRCTC logged in, passenger master list saved, UPI pin ready. One day's delay = WL 150+. Seen it happen to my own cousin.
If direct is REGRET, do these 3 things (in order)
1. Look for a split on the same train. Railways splits seats by station quota — Delhi–Howrah full, but Delhi–DDU + DDU–Howrah empty, same train, same day. Smart Seats finds these combos. You book two PNRs on IRCTC, shift berths at the middle station. Legal, TTEs see it daily during Puja. Extra cost? Just double reservation charge, ~₹40–80. Worth it, no?
2. Try Tatkal correctly, then stop chasing it. 10 AM AC / 11 AM sleeper, day before origin departure. Puja Tatkal is a bloodbath though — gone in seconds. If you miss it once, jump to step 1 and 3 instead of retrying agents. My brother-in-law got Howrah-bound last year this way after Tatkal failed.
3. Grab post-chart leftovers. After first chart, unused VIP/defence/middle-station seats release as CURR_AVBL — fully confirmed, bookable on IRCTC till ~30 mins before departure. Check Get Confirmed Tickets right after charting; confirm timing on Chart Times. I once picked 3AC at 11 PM for a next-morning train. Keep IRCTC logged in, UPI ready.
Split result: two green confirmed legs instead of one red REGRET — same train.
Exact splits that work — train numbers included
Vague advice doesn't help at 8 AM, so here are the three I get asked about most. Always re-check on your date — quotas shift daily.
Delhi → Kolkata (Durga Puja peak)
- Train 12302 Howrah Rajdhani, NDLS → HWH, 3AC REGRET? Typical.
- Break that works: NDLS → DDU (Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, old Mughalsarai) confirmed + DDU → HWH confirmed. Same train.
- Book both legs on IRCTC, carry both SMS/PDFs. Tell the attendant at DDU — hundred passengers do this during Puja week.
Delhi → Patna (Dussehra rush)
- Train 12392 Shramjeevi, Sleeper + 3AC REGRET? Happens every year.
- Break: NDLS → Lucknow confirmed + Lucknow → PNBE confirmed. Same rake.
- Lucknow halt gives you time to refill water, shift seats. I reached Patna fresh morning for the mela doing exactly this.
Delhi–Patna splits usually break at Lucknow or DDU — search both.
Mumbai → Ahmedabad (Navratri/Dussehra)
- Train 20901 Vande Bharat, MMCT → Gandhinagar, CC + Executive REGRET on Navratri weekends? Normal.
- Break: MMCT → Surat (ST) confirmed + Surat → ADI confirmed. Same Vande Bharat, 30-second seat swap at Surat.
Short route, so Surat splits open up often.
Booking steps — what I tap on my phone
- Open LastBerth home. Light site, works on mobile data.
- Enter origin, destination, date, class — e.g. NDLS, HWH, Oct 17, 3A. Keep 1–2 alternate dates; a day's shift can flip REGRET to confirmed.
- If direct is dead, open the Smart Seats options. Conditions I check: same train number on both legs, same date, same class. Note them down.
- Book on IRCTC Rail Connect app — longer leg first (it fills faster), then the shorter one. Two PNRs by SMS. Forward to family WhatsApp for tracking.
Plus two pages I keep open Puja week: Get Confirmed Tickets for post-chart CURR_AVBL coach maps, Chart Times for exact chart minute, and Get Confirmed Tickets so I know where B3 stands at Howrah/NDLS chaos. Saves a sprint with mithai dabbas.
Stuck on Waiting List (WL or RAC)?
Don't gamble on confirmation chances. Search confirmed split tickets on the same train and secure your seat.
FAQ — questions I get every single Puja
Tatkal failed at 10 AM, now what?
Fact: try general-quota splits on Smart Seats first — no Tatkal needed. Then watch Get Confirmed Tickets after first chart for CURR_AVBL. Tatkal re-attempts rarely work Puja week; splits + chart leftovers do. That's how my brother-in-law reached Howrah last year.
Are those 0-number Puja specials cheaper?
No — costlier. Fact: 0-series = special fare, +10% in 2S, +30% in sleeper/AC, no senior-citizen concession. Still, if it's confirmed vs. missing Ashtami anjali at home? My family paid the extra ₹300 happily. Just verify the train number on IRCTC before paying — numbers shuffle yearly.
Bottom line
REGRET isn't personal, it's quota maths. For Delhi–Howrah, Delhi–Patna, Mumbai–Ahmedabad: search splits on LastBerth, note chart time on Chart Times, pounce on Get Confirmed Tickets after charting. One of the three usually clicks.
Shubho Pujo in advance — and grab a window seat past Bardhaman, October morning fields are lovely.
LastBerth is an independent seat-finder I use — not IRCTC or Railways, just reads quotas better.
Stuck on Waiting List (WL or RAC)?
Don't gamble on confirmation chances. Search confirmed split tickets on the same train and secure your seat.
