🚀 Diwali train on REGRET? Direct answer: search Get Confirmed Tickets on LastBerth Smart Seats for two confirmed halves of the same train (Delhi–Kanpur + Kanpur–Patna type).

Facts first — Diwali 2026 dates & booking days

Diwali week: Nov 6 (Dhanteras) → Nov 7 (Choti Diwali) → Nov 8 (Lakshmi Puja, Sunday) → Nov 9 (Govardhan) → Nov 10 (Bhai Dooj). Busiest corridors: Delhi–Patna, Delhi–Mumbai, Mumbai–Ahmedabad. Demand runs 3–4x seats — my building WhatsApp group goes full war-room every year ("8 baje login kar lena!"), papa on laptop, beta on mobile. Still REGRET by 8:01.

Key rules, no fluff:

  • IRCTC opens 60 days before, 8:00 AM IST. Tatkal: 10 AM AC / 11 AM sleeper, one day before origin departure. Chart: 4–8 hrs before departure (Delhi morning trains usually chart previous evening ~8 PM).
  • REGRET = IRCTC stopped selling even waitlists. Online waitlist left after chart = auto-cancelled + refund, no travel. Don't board on it — Section 138 fine + full embarrassment in sleeper coach.

Booking calendar (8 AM):

Missed the window? That's what the rest of this guide is for — specials + splits + chart leftovers.

If direct is REGRET, do these 3 things

1. Split the same train. Railways divides seats by station quota. Delhi–Patna full, but Delhi–Kanpur + Kanpur–Patna empty — same train, same day, same class. Smart Seats finds these pairs. Book two PNRs on IRCTC, shift berths midway (usually same coach, 2-min walk). 100% legal, TTEs see it all Diwali week. Extra cost only ~₹40–80 double reservation charge.

2. Try origin-station booking. Small stations get tiny RLWL/PQWL quotas that die first; origin stations get the big GNWL pool. Example: Aligarh REGRET but Anand Vihar (origin) WL 20 or confirmed → book from Anand Vihar, change boarding point to Aligarh on IRCTC (allowed till second chart, ~30 mins before). My uncle from Tundla does this yearly.

3. Pounce post-chart. After first chart, leftover VIP/defence/middle-station seats release as CURR_AVBL — confirmed, normal price, bookable till ~30 mins before. Check Get Confirmed Tickets right after chart (timing on Chart Times). My sister grabbed Mumbai–Surat CC at 9 PM for next morning this way. Keep IRCTC logged in + UPI ready — these fly.

Smart Seats Split Booking Example: Delhi to Patna Direct REGRET, both halves green and confirmed — same train.

Exact splits — with train numbers

Quotas change daily, so re-search your date. But these breaks repeat most Diwalis:

Delhi → Patna (Dhanteras rush)

  • Train 12394 Sampoorna Kranti, NDLS → PNBE. Sleeper/3AC REGRET or WL 180? Standard.
  • Break: NDLS → Kanpur Central confirmed + Kanpur → PNBE confirmed. Same train. Board New Delhi, swap at Kanpur, sleep till Patna. My brother reached a day early for Dhanteras shopping doing this in 2024.

Delhi → Mumbai (pre-Diwali weekend)

  • Train 12954 August Kranti Rajdhani, NZM → MMCT, 3AC REGRET? Every year.
  • Break: NZM → Kota confirmed + Kota → MMCT confirmed. Same Rajdhani. Kota halt is enough to shift; Rajdhani khana makes the extra ticket feel okay.

Smart Seats Split Booking Example: Delhi to Mumbai Delhi–Mumbai splits usually break at Kota — less searched, more seats.

Mumbai → Ahmedabad (festival weekend)

  • Train 12009 Shatabdi, MMCT → ADI, CC REGRET? Gujarati families + office-goers + students all moving together.
  • Break: MMCT → Surat (ST) confirmed + Surat → ADI confirmed. Same Shatabdi. Barely finish your cutting chai and it's time to shift.

Smart Seats Split Booking Example: Mumbai to Ahmedabad Short routes open Surat splits constantly — check it first.

Booking steps — my 8 AM routine

  1. Open LastBerth home, IRCTC Rail Connect logged in side-by-side. Master passenger list saved, UPI PIN ready.
  2. Enter origin, destination, date, class. I'm flexible between 3E and 3A during Diwali — doubles chances. You should be too if budget allows.
  3. If direct is dead, open Smart Seats legs. My checks: same train number both legs, same date, same class. Longer leg first on IRCTC (fills faster), then shorter. Two PNR SMS → forward to family WhatsApp.
  4. Chart day: check Chart Times once, set alarm 15 mins after chart, open Get Confirmed Tickets. Screenshot Get Confirmed Tickets too — Anand Vihar on Choti Diwali is chaos, knowing B3's position saves a run with mithai dabbas.

0-series Diwali specials (040xx/010xx numbers)? They cost +10% 2S / +30% sleeper-AC, no concessions, booking opens late (10–30 days before, after press notes). Price stays flat unlike Suvidha surge. I track them Sunday mornings with chai — got one in 2023, home by Nov 7 evening. Phew.

FAQ — straight answers

My e-ticket is waitlisted, can I board?

No — if it's online and still waiting after final chart, it's auto-cancelled and invalid. Refund comes in a few days, but TTE treats boarding as ticketless (Section 138: fine + fare). Counter paper waitlists can sit in general coach, but for Diwali just get a split confirmed instead. Safer, no drama.

Will I change coach midway with splits?

Mostly no — same coach, different berth. Sometimes B3 → B5 type walk through the vestibule at the halt. I did Kanpur with backpack + sweet box in 40 seconds. No platform change, no new train.

Are two-ticket journeys legal?

Yes, 100%. Two genuine IRCTC tickets, two PNRs, names + ID. TTE checks first PNR till middle station, second after. His words to me once: "Diwali-Chhath mein sab aise hi aate hain." Common in festival season.

Where do I see empty seats after chart?

Get Confirmed Tickets: enter train number + date, green berths = CURR_AVBL, bookable on IRCTC till ~30 mins before. I refresh twice — right after chart, and 2 hrs before departure. Second wave pops when RACs shift. Good luck!

Bottom line

Don't sit on a Diwali WL 150 and pray. Try splits on Smart Seats, origin-station + boarding change, then chart leftovers on Get Confirmed Tickets timed via Chart Times. Delhi–Patna, Delhi–Mumbai, Mumbai–Ahmedabad — one route usually clicks.

Light one extra diya for me if you reach. Happy Diwali!

LastBerth is an independent seat-finder I use — not IRCTC or Railways, just reads quotas better.
